The Gentle Dawn

From St. Paul’s shores to Montana’s streams,

She lived a life of quiet grace,

Of quiet woods and glowing dreams,

And warmth that time cannot erase.

Yet left her richest work behind

In every heart where laughter spreads.

A botany class, a sudden spark,

With her true love right by her side;

Through evening tunes that softened dark,

A romance deep and ocean-wide.

She ran the miles, she cast the line,

Beneath the big western skies,

Caught native fish where waters shine,

And saw the magic in young eyes.

For grandchildren on riverbanks,

And game-board nights of joyful noise,

For Christmas magic, giving thanks,

As Mary bringing endless joys.

Though now she sleeps, her tune plays on.
